Among the 20 of January 24 and nine of 25, North Italy was hit by an earthquake swarm. At Verona and Milan have been recorded earthquakes on several occasions, with a magnitude between 2.1 and 4.9 on the Richter scale. The tremors were also felt in neighboring regions, including Piedmont, Liguria, Trentino, Valle d’Aosta, Tuscany and Emilia. Citizens have reported the earthquake alarmed the Fire Department in more cities, but the barracks of the various provinces are aware that there have been no damage to property and persons.
At 20:41 on 24 January, the seismographs of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale in the province of Verona in the Veneto region of the Alps. Soon it was followed by another milder than 2.1 degrees at 20:49. Both tremors were felt by many municipalities in the area. On the night of Jan. 25, at 0:54 there was a third shock, always in the same district earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2, followed by another 2.1 degrees at 1:05. In this case the shock would be felt as far as Bologna and Milan.
And Milan this morning was hit by another earthquake. At around 9.10 the quake rocked the upper floors of buildings. Many people took to the streets, because of the alarm systems that have issued evacuation orders. The seismographs have recorded the magnitude 4.2 and the epicenter in the area of Reggio Emilia, precisely between the towns of Poviglio, Bresciello and Castel di Sotto. There are ongoing surveys by the Fire Department in the area and in areas where the earthquake was felt. The quake was felt in Emilia, Turin, Genoa, in the Valle d’Aosta, Trentino and Tuscany. In various places the call centers of the Fire Brigade have been bombarded with calls, but several parties are aware that there are no recorded damage or injury.
